Woodcut reproductions on paper
Signed “E.M. Washington” with apocryphal dates to the margin
Known copyist, Earl Marshawn Washington began producing and selling his prints under the falsified claim that his great-grandfather Earl Mack Washington (1862-1952) created prints or saved prints from a New York print shop during a fire. However, such prints are mere reproductions after renowned Art Deco illustrators and printmakers such as Rockwell Kent (1882-1971), Eric Gill (1882–1940), M.C. Escher (1898-1972), and others. Most works include fictitious dates to the margins – a reference to the original image.
