Growing up in Frankfort, Kentucky, Paul Sawyier began his artistic training with a private tutor at a young age. He went on to have many notable instructors throughout his career, including Thomas Noble, Merritt Chase and Frank Duveneck. Returning to Frankfort after a time in New York, Sawyier made a living painting portraits and the local scenery. He first encountered Impressionism at the 1893 World’s Fair and became one of the movement’s first proponents in Kentucky. Paul Sawyier’s works are represented in the collections of numerous prestigious institutions including the University of Kentucky Art Museum, the Mason County Museum, the Morris Museum of Art, and The Johnson Collection, among many others.
