American oil and watercolor artist Victor Casenelli was born in New York City in 1867. When he was a young child, his family moved to Cincinnati, where he would remain for twelve years and begin his art career. Casenelli opened a studio on Vine Street, and painted murals and backdrops for Pike’s Opera Company. To gain a better financial footing, he simultaneously made commercial pastels. In 1904, Casenelli married his wife, fellow artist and composer Harriet Davies, and together they moved to Michigan where they would remain for the rest of their careers. Casenelli spent much of his time traveling across the United States and Europe. He was known for his depictions of Native Americans and land and seascapes. In the late 1930s, Casenelli spent much of his time in St. Augustine, Florida. He was especially favored for his golden and umber-toned sunset paintings. He was also featured in several exhibitions, including the St. Augustine Arts Club and the Florida Federation of Art Annual Exhibit. One of Casenelli’s most notable works, however, was a mural for William Howard Taft’s home in Cincinnati. Casenelli continued to travel and paint until his passing in 1961.
