American artist, Carl Reed, was born in 1994 New York to a family of artists. His maternal grandparents were members of the Swedish Arts and Crafts movement, which sought to make art more accessible by bringing it into the home through design. His father was the son of tradesmen and woodworkers. As a child he began to study drawing, which led to studying art history in high school and became a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Pratt Institute, New York. In 1973, a few years after receiving his MFA, Reed received a grant to study design in Scandinavia, retracing the footsteps of his Swedish mother’s heritage and artistic traditions. Upon his return, he relocated to the American Mountain West, where he spent time living and working in Wyoming and Colorado. The landscapes and local materials brought an interest in light plays, texture and scale to Reed’s sculptural work. By the time his art reached its mature stage, Reed had become a Formalist with an interest in site-specific and public art. He currently resides in Colorado as artist and professor. His work can be found in many private and public collections including Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, Cazenovia, NY; Place de la Republique, Pfaffenhoffen, Alsace, France; Centennial Square, Sterling, CO.
