Predominantly a portrait artist, Elliott Jordan particularly specializes in paintings featuring influential figures of black history and the African diaspora. He was born in Virginia and at a young age, moved to Versailles, Kentucky with his mother. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Art at Murray State University and his Master’s degree in Art Education at the University of Kentucky, he went on to teach art in Cincinnati Public Schools until his retirement. As an artist, Jordan is driven by themes of social consciousness, spirituality, and black history and culture. In addition to his undergraduate instructor Tony Drodge, some of his artistic influences include Old European Masters, Diego Velázquez, Édouard Manet, and figural Impressionism. Jordan has exhibited at numerous art venues including Kennedy Heights Art Center, the Women’s Art Barn, and the Harriet Beecher Stowe House among others. His interest in black culture and the African Diaspora has driven him to travel abroad in Ghana and take a part-time residence in the Dominican Republic. In 1995, he opened a studio in Pleasant Ridge called Elliott Jordan Studio Gallery, where he continues to make art, sell African art, and teach studio classes.
