Known for his depictions of village life and Balinese dance, Anak Agung Gede Sobrat is considered one of the first Balinese painters to incorporate Western aesthetics into his work. His grandfather was a well-known wayang puppeteer and introduced Sobrat to Hindu epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. He joined the Pita Maha group and studied under German artist Walter Spies (1895-1942) and Dutch painter Johan Rudolf Bonnet (1895-1978. Sobrat’s work has been exhibited and collected by multiple institutions including the Neka Art Museum in Bali, the Museum Sonobudoyo in Java, and the Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde in Holland, among others.
