Morgan was a London-born painter best known for his domestic genre scenes and distinguished portraits. At the age of fourteen, he traveled to Paris and studied under Thomas Couture. He later studied the Old Masters and government at Le Havre. More interested in life and travel, Morgan spent the 1840s as a sailor before landing in New York to focus on art again. He pursued study at the National Academy of Design from 1855 to 1860. However, he did “very little studying” during that time. After showing his work in the annual Academy exhibitions, Morgan began to be recognized for his charming and sensitive depictions. He later began to exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fines Arts, which associated him with the Pennsylvania school for many years. He was an elected member of the National Academy of Design and a member of the Artists Fund Society.
