Bob Mizer Silver Gelatin Photograph of Seated Male Model

Item Details

Robert “Bob” Henry Mizer (American, 1922 – 1992)
Untitled, mid to late 20th century
Unsigned

Robbert Mizer is considered by many to be an obsessive photographer, maintaining a studio and shooting multiple models nearly every day. The queer artist’s fascination with the male form led to his arrest in 1954 for unlawful distribution of obscene material using the United States Postal Service, a conviction that escalated his fame. Mizer’s photographs are known for exploring the male form, athleticism, and sexuality at a time when male nudity was illegal. Mizer established the “beefcake” magazine Physique Pictorial which was released at his studio, Athletic Model Guild. His works greatly influenced artists Robert Maplethorpe, David Hockney, and others.
