Irvine was a well-regarded Impressionist landscape painter. Early in his artistic career, he mastered the new medium of airbrush while working as an illustrator and graphic designer. Soon, he relocated to Chicago and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago for seven years. AIC would continue to support Irvine’s work throughout his career, often offering him solo exhibitions. Irvine was also closely associated with the Old Lyme School in Connecticut. The group was led by Florence Griswold and was known as the American Barbizon School. Irvine’s landscapes are celebrated and many paintings are held in permanent collections, most notably at the Art Institute of Chicago, Union League Club, National Portrait Gallery and more.
