Jacques Joseph Tissot, commonly known as James Tissot, was Born in Nantes, France. At the age of 20 Tissot moved to Paris and was admitted to Ecole des Beaux-Arts where he studied under Hippolyte Flandrin (1809 – 1864) and Lois Lamothe (1822 – 1869). It was during his studies Tissot met and befriended James McNiell Whistler (1834 – 1903) and Edgar Degas (1834 – 1917). Influenced by his mother and father’s successful clothing business, Tissot became popular for his genre illustrations of fanciful dressed women, giving special detail to the drapery and texture of the elegant clothing. In 1871 he moved to London after fighting in the Franco-Prussian war. Once in London, Tissot worked towards harnessing the artistry of etching under the guidance of Hayden Seymore (1818 – 1910). At the end of his life he experienced a renewal of his Catholic faith and began solely creating scenes from the bible in a movement towards realism and as a way to separate himself from the popular impressionism and pointillism movements.

Tissot’s works have been exhibited in the Paris Salon, The Royal Academy, among many others. His work can be found in private and public collections including the Tate, The Brooklyn Museum, The National Gallery of Art and more.
