As the third generation of the celebrated Gruppé family of Massachusetts artists, Robert is best known for his plein-air paintings of landscapes and harbor scenes, notably Gloucester and Bahama scenes. After a twenty-year apprenticeship under his father, Emile Albert Gruppé (1896 – 1978), at his Gloucester School of Art, Robert received a scholarship to the Elizabeth Greenshield Foundation of Canada. There he studied drawing under sculptor George Demetrios (1896 – 1974). He continues to create Impressionist scenes and exhibit along the Eastern coast. His work is collected privately and publicly.
Condition
- slight dent to the canvas to the roof to the upper left and minor indent to the canvas at the joint of stretchers to the upper left corner; minor edge abrasions to the canvas.
