"Chotscho: Koeniglich Preussische Turfan-Expeditionen" by Albert von Le Coq

Item Details

Chotscho: Koeniglich Preussische Turfan-Expeditionen by Albert von Le Coq documents the first German Turfan expedition and contains reproductions of ancient wall paintings, statues, and documents found in the Turfan region at Chotscho, the Bezeklik Caves, and the Toyuk Caves. Le Coq (Prussian/German, 1860–1930) was an archaeologist and explorer who led several German expeditions to the Turfan area in Central Asia. The subtitle translates to “Facsimile Reproduction of Important Findings of the First Royal Prussian Expedition to Turfan in East Turkistan.” This is a rare book, one of only a few surviving copies. The original photographs and prints from the Bezeklik Caves were destroyed in World War II, making this book the only existing record of invaluable artifacts and artwork that no longer exist. The folio’s pagination is complete, though only the original front board and backstrip cloth are present. There are eighteen pages with some text illustrations, including forty-five colored and thirty black-and-white photoprints, as well as seventy-four further text pages.
