An avid sportsman himself, Ogden Minton Pleisnner understood how to translate the motions and accuracy of hunting and fishing into expertly rendered paintings for which he is famous. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was always enamored with the outdoors despite growing up in the city. He spent much of his time as a child and as an adult in Wyoming painting the Grand Tetons and other natural wonders. Pleissner began his artistic studies at the Art Students League in New York working in various mediums. Eventually, he switched almost exclusively to watercolor as he found it created a fluidity and transparency complimentary to sporting art compositions as well as being easier to transport for painting plein air. Pleissner was not exclusive to sporting and outdoor art however, he also painted military bases for the U.S. Air Force and was commissioned by Life magazine during World War II to paint the Normandy Invasion. Later in Pleissner’s life, he enjoyed painting urban landscapes in France. Pleissner was also an accomplished member of the American Watercolor Society, the Audubon Artists, and the Society of American Etchers, and his works are housed in collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Toledo Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
