Self-taught artist James C. Litz is best known for his folk and “primitive-naïve” style compositions depicting humorous and colorful figural landscapes of American scenery. He began dabbling in painting later on in his life, after spending many of his early years in the Army serving for the Vietnam War. Litz was encouraged and influenced by renowned folk artist William Moses, who advised him to pursue an artistic career. The traumatic experiences from the war led him to find a safe and joyful place away from society, and he did so when painting vibrant compositions of everyday life. Litz’s oeuvre has been exhibited in multiple public and private exhibitions including the Yolanda Gallery, Chicago, the Museé D’Art Naïf de l’lle De France, the International Folk Art Museum, California, the James Fennimore Coopers Museum, New York and many others.
