Famed photojournalist and Life Magazine alum, Andreas Feininger was born in France and was raised by a family of artists and musicians. He left high school at the age of sixteen to study at the Bauhaus where he graduated as a cabinet maker. He later went on to study architecture at Staatliche Bauschule Weimar (State Architectural College, Weimar) and the Staatliche Bauschule Zerbst. Feininger’s interest in photography peaked during this time and he was encouraged and given guidance by Bauhaus teacher and friend László Moholy-Nagy. Feininger eventually abandoned his study of architecture and moved to New York City just before World War II to pursue photography full time. Although he gave up his studies, his eye for architecture is quite evident in his well-known black-and-white photographs of New York City. Feininger’s work can be found in the collections of the Center for Creative Photography, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, and the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York.
