Moudarres was a Syrian painter and a leading figure in the Surrealism movement. Born in Aleppo, Moudarres was a self-taught Realism artist until be became interested in Surrealism. After high school, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma from 1954 to 1960 under the tutelage of Professor Franco Gentilini (1909 – 1981), the chair of painting. While at the academy, Moudarres developed his distinctive surrealist style and religious iconography, hallmarks of his early works. However, in the 1960s, Moudarres’s oeuvre leaned to non-objective depictions. In the early 1970s, he studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris before returning to Syria and teaching at University of Damascus. Moudarres’s paintings are highly collected and held in the collection of Arab Museum of Modern Art.

The label to the verso indicates the work was produced during the artist’s time studying at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, 1954 – 1960, under Professor Franco Gentilini (1909 – 1981).

- minor abrasions to the edges and surface of the frame; negligible paint chipping and scratches throughout the composition.
