Ruby C. Williams was raised in Bealsville, Florida, a community founded in 1865 by freed slaves, including Williams’ great grandmother, Mary Reddick. She left for New Jersey, where she became a minister, and then returned to Florida where she ran a produce stand on her property. It was her brightly colored hand-painted signs that attracted the attention of Rodney Hardy, who encouraged her to sell her work beginning in 1991. Williams has since exhibited her work in galleries and museums both in Florida and across the country, including at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in Washington D.C., and in 2005 she was awarded the Florida Folk Heritage Award.
