Ernest Cramer was born in Saalfeld, Thuringia, Germany in 1877. In the late 19th century Cramer began studying painting at the Royal Academy of Art in Dresden specializing in oil and watercolor, eventually, he would become popular for creating English School landscapes. Before moving to New York in 1913, Cramer was already earning a living as a full-time artist in order to support his wife and son. The Great Depression of the early 20th century proved disastrous for the artist and family when they lost their house due to financial hardship. The family moved to Long Island where Cramer established his own studio, working on his own art as well as teaching. When work became scarce for the artist, Cramer turned to the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) for employment and worked on an array of military illustrations.
Cramer’s works have been exhibited at the Esquire Theatre in Chicago and the Suffolk Museum among others. A few of his oil and watercolor paintings can be found in The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Princeton University Art Museum, though many of Cramer’s works are held in private collections.
