13'11 x 20'5 Lavar Kerman Southeast Persian Pictorial Carpet, circa 1890

Item Details

The city of Kerman has been one of the major weaving centers in Persia since at least the late 16th century. Interestingly, Kerman was one of the few cities in Persia that did not suffer the political and economic turmoil that affected the rest of the country during the 18th and early 19th centuries and carpet weaving in organized workshops continued unabated from the classical period of the 17th century through to the renaissance period of the 19th century and early 20th century.

The present carpet is a wonderful example of late 19th century Kermani weaving that distinctly displays the Qajari aesthetic rather than a design intentionally made for the export market. Here, the classic arabesque lobed medallion flanked by quarter medallion corner spandrels defined within a contrasting border design is vividly drawn with lions slaying antelope and camels, lions confronting leopards, foxes, birds and other fauna, all interspersed among scrolling arabesque floral vines representing the ‘eternal hunt’ in paradise. Of particular note, is the central medallion cartouche depicting—in a flattened plane—fish in a pool with ducks swimming on the surface and a peacock, perching birds and antelope on the water’s edge. The ivory, lac red and deep blue primary coloration and drawing of the design motifs are also classically Qajari Kerman. The almost anthropomorphic drawing of the animal’s faces is strikingly similar to the depiction of people in Qajar period portraiture, reinforcing this carpets place within the oeuvre of Iranian art, rather than a watered-down version of a “Persian” style intended for the decorative export market.
