Jens Jensen was a Danish-born Modernist painter whose work reflects a combination of his Scandinavian background, his adopted American home and the artistic movements of his time. He arrived in the United States in 1927, and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio where he joined the renowned Rookwood Pottery as an artist, quickly becoming known as the resident modernist. During his tenure there his work was exhibited at the Golden Gate Exposition of the 1940s, the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Modern Art Society. Upon Rookwood’s closing in 1948, Jensen and his wife moved to Ripley, Ohio where he painted full time for the next 30 years, though his paintings were rarely exhibited during his lifetime. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Riverside Museum, New York.
