Though he never attached himself to one specific artist movement, Botello was one of the greatest Latin American Post-Modern artists of the 20th century. Known as the “The Caribbean Gauguin,’ his works depict the spirituality of island life through abstracted forms and bright colors. Working in all the artistic media available, Botello studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and School of Art of the San Fernando Academy. During the Spanish Civil War, he was forced to leave his studies and serve in the Republican Army as a cartographer. After the war, he fled to France to join his family as refugees. Eventually, they were warmly welcomed by the artist community of Dominican Republic and Botello continued his artistic career, exhibiting throughout the Caribbean and Central America, and opened a gallery in the Caribe Hilton Hotel in 1953. Botello’s works can be found in private and public collections, notably the Kennedy Center, Washington, DC, Hispanic Museum, New York, and more.
