Best known for his winter landscapes of Bucks county, Sotter was considered a minor yet popular artist of the Pennsylvania Impressionist movement. Better known for his stained glass works, he accepted commissions from churches and monasteries throughout the country. Sotter began his painting studies under Henry G. Keller and later at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under William Merritt Chase, Edward Redfield, and Thomas Anshutz. He remained a locally popular artist, admired by his peers and was often awarded a favorite painting vote at exhibitions in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Sotter held a post as assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University during the 1910s. His works are collected privately and publicly.
