Born in Brooklyn, Maggie Smith studied painting for two years in high school with Will Barnett at The Art Students League in New York, and after college she lived and studied painting for a time in Florence, Italy. She worked in Boston as a children’s book illustrator for Little, Brown and Company, Atlantic Monthly Press, and Houghton Mifflin Publishers. A highlight of these is her work illustrating Osprey Island by Anne Lindbergh Feydy, the daughter of aviators Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. From childhood, Maggie has always been fond of flea markets and collecting small objects and odd pieces from travels abroad; from these collections she began creating found object “sculptures” that take on a life of their own.
