An oil portrait in the English School style. The work depicts a lady during the early Georgian era in the manner of a Sir Godfrey Kneller ‘beauty.’ The frame plaque identifies the subject as Susan Penelope Rosse (1652–1700). However, this identification remains unconfirmed.
Condition
- label to verso indicates painting was cleaned and revarnished with Windsor Newton Damar in 1973; canvas has been relined; scattered inpainting; craquelure across painting surface; shallow dent to canvas to upper right; stretcher marks; dust and light scattered accretion to painting surface; chipping, cracking, finish loss and accretion to frame; separation to frame joins.
