Known for his children’s book illustrations, Everett Jackson was also a painter and lithographer. Initially studying at the Texas A&M University, Jackson decided to study art at the Art Institute of Chicago and the San Diego State College, where he later became a professor. Heavily influenced by the artist Diego Rivera, his semi-abstract works of art often featured figures and landscapes synonymous with the south. His illustrations graced the pages of many books including Ramona, by Helen Hunt Jackson.
