Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1879, Kilvert left his homeland at a very young age for New York to study at The Art Students League with Robert Henri, member of the Ashcan School. Among his peers were Edward Hopper, George Bellows and Rockwell Kent, who, like Kilvert, were all heavily influenced by Henri. Kilvert became best known for his illustrations, usually in gouache or watercolor, that appeared in many magazine and book publications, including Life, from roughly 1902 to the mid-1930s. His work is represented in many public institutions, including Brandywine River Museum, Farnsworth Art Museum, Hotel des Artistes in New York, and the Pine Valley Golf Club in Pine Valley, New Jersey, as well as in many private collections throughout the country.
