A fastidious interpreter of the Hawaiian landscape, David Howard Hitchcock studied drawing at Punahau School in Honolulu, painting at Oberlin College in Ohio, and studied art at California School of Design with Virgil Williams. Hitchcock painted countless volcanoes, which circulated widely enough to attract tourists to the islands, and created large dioramas and mural-size paintings of island life. Hitchcock also helped found the Kilohana Art League and the Honolulu Art Society, which helped promote local artists. His work is collected throughout the world.
