Artist suffered a stroke which paralyzed his dominant hand and trained himself to use his other hand.
Born in Ohio, Hudson River School artist Alexander Helwig Wyant was a tonalist landscape and genre painter influenced by George Inness. He studied at the National Academy in New York and in Germany at the Dusseldorf School of Artists. Wyant exhibited his work at the the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Brooklyn Art Association, National Academy, the Boston Arts Club, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Wyant suffered a stroke later in life that paralyzed his right hand, which forced him to develop a looser style using his left hand.
