Born in St. Paul Minnesota in 1902, Theodore Gilbert Haupt was one of five children and consequently not encouraged to pursue art by his parents. Nevertheless Haupt’s talents couldn’t be ignored and at age twenty-one his work received praise for his work shown in an exhibition at the Beard Gallery in Minneapolis. He later attended Minneapolis School of Art where he studied with acclaimed Chicago modernist Anthony Angarola. In 1923 Haupt received a scholarship and relocated to Paris to study for two years at the Académie Julian. Returning to the United States, Haupt made his living in New York as an artist and graphic designer for The New Yorker, Charm, and Vanity Fair with 45 New Yorker covers over a 6 year period. During the 1930’s Haupt’s work was show at a number of prestigious institutions such as The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art; The Minneapolis Institute of Art; and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Moving to Mexico with his wife Miriam Deihl, the artist’ work took a new direction as he began to focus on cultural contrasts. His compositions attempt to merge cubist form with the surrealist subjects, never fully falling under the umbrella of either. Today The artist’s work belongs in the collections of The Museum of the City of New York, The Museum of Modern Art, The former Finch College Museum, New York University, The University of Pennsylvania, The University of Massachusetts.
