Born in Cranston, Rhode Island, Herbert Barnett began his formal artistic training studying at the Rhode Island School of Design while still in high school, before training at Boston Museum School for four years, acquiring an advanced knack for technical proficiency. He had his first solo show by age 17 in Boston at the Grace Horne Gallery, and was teaching private classes to his own students. During his schooling, he was awarded the Paige Traveling Fellowship and spent three years studying in Europe when he finished school. His mature style eventually evolved into a harmonious marriage of traditional American representation and the structure and abstraction of Cubism.

Barnett’s works are represented in the permanent collections of numerous prestigious institutions, including Cincinnati Art Museum; Art Academy of Cincinnati; Arizona State University Art Museum; Maier Museum of Art; Art Institute of Chicago; Worcester Art Museum; The University of Arizona Museum of Art; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; Mead Art Museum; Robert Hull Fleming Museum; National Gallery of Art, Washington DC; and New Britain Museum of American Art, among others.
