John Barnard Whittaker was born in Ireland on August 16, 1836 and in 1848 Whittaker’s family emigrated to Brooklyn, New York. He was first taught to paint by his father, a decorator, grainer, and watercolor artist. When he became older, Whittaker studied at the National Academy of Design and Graham Art School, where he would eventually teach at for six years. After its closing, he taught at Adelphi Academy and became the head of the department for forty-one years until his retirement. Whittaker was also among the founders of the (Brooklyn) Sketch Club (1857), the Brooklyn Art Social (1859), the Brooklyn Art Association (1860), and the Brooklyn Academy of Design (1867). His work is collected by various public and private collections.
