Alfred de Breanski Sr. was born in Greenwich, England to an artistic family of Polish origin. He had a long and distinguished career as a landscape painter, mostly specializing in wilderness scenes of Scotland and Wales, and influenced by John Constable and J.M.W. Turner, the preeminent English landscape painters of the time. His work blends Romanticism with Realism, and he was especially focused on capturing textural detail and naturalistic, shifting light. De Breanski found early success, exhibiting at the Royal Academy in London in 1872, at only twenty years of age. Shortly after, he married Welsh painter Annie Roberts, with whom he had seven children, two of which, Alfred Jr. and Arthur, went on to become well-known artists themselves. De Breanski continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in London and the Royal Cambrian Academy in Wales. His work resides in the permanent collections of the Sydney Museum in Australia, Southampton Art Gallery and Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne, Brighton and Hove Museums in Brighton, and more.
