Heinrich Johann von Zügel was a German painter who is best known for his animal paintings and Impressionist landscapes. He first studied at the Art Academy in Stuttgart, before transferring to Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Uninspired with the teaching of Karl von Piloty there, Zugel finally left school to work on his own, eventually finding a mentor in Anton Braith. He was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich from 1895 – 1922, and his work resides a Memorial Gallery at the Old City Hall in Wörth am Rhein, as well as the National Gallery in Berlin.

- craquelure across painting surface; scattered inpainting, most notably to left side; some areas have been revarnished; minor wear and accretion to frame.
