Andrew Melrose Landscape Oil Painting "Mountain Retreat"

Item Details

Andrew Melrose (New Jersey/California, 1836 – 1901)
Mountain Retreat
Oil painting on canvas
Signed to lower left

Andrew Melrose is best known for his atmospheric landscapes, painted in a Romantic Realist style influenced at first by the Hudson River School and later by the Impressionists. He was born in Scotland, in 1836, and immigrated to the United States in his early twenties, eventually settling in New Jersey. Little is known about his upbringing and training, and it is assumed that he was a self-taught artist. He traveled throughout the U.S. as well as England and Ireland, in search of landscapes to paint, and was especially enamored with the mountains of North Carolina. Melrose exhibited his work at the National Academy of Design from 1868 to 1883, and later in his career created lithographs from his paintings, and worked as a book illustrator. His work resides in the collections of the White House, the New-York Historical Society, the Newark Museum of Art and the American Museum of Western Art.
