John Frederick Tennant, born in England in 1796, was mostly self taught except for some study with William Anderson. He is best known for his genre scene paintings depicting fishermen, coastal scenes and landscapes, all recognized for their soft light and subtle color. He was one of sixteen founding members of the Society of British Artists and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1820 to 1897.

- craquelure and scattered inpainting across painting surface, with areas of lift; stretcher marks to upper edge and right side; minor nicks and surface wear to frame.
