Item Details
Karen Savage Martin (American, Chicago, 1948-2017)
Untitled
Unsigned
Karen Savage was an American artist whose work highlighted the ephemeral and deeply personal and intersecting experiences of femininity, religion, society, and material quality. Savage graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with her MFA in 1972, and worked there for over 30 years as a teacher, graduate advisor, curator, and department chair in Printmedia and Photography. She is best known for her photograms of linens and clothing, in which she placed textile objects onto large sheets of photosensitive paper and exposed the sheets to light, creating stark negative images. Her work is housed at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Saint Etienne, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Cranbrook Museum of Art, and more.
