Garrett developed his formal artistic training at the Académie Julian in Paris, studying under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre, among others. He was a member of the Boston Art Club, and the Copley Society of Art, and later became friends with fellow painter Childe Hassam, with whom he painted regularly. In addition to his paintings, Garrett was a prolific illustrator and bookplate-maker. Garrett’s works are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, New York Public Library and University of Wyoming Art Museum, among others.
