Developed by Professor Holmgren in 1879 and manufactured by the American Optical Company, Southbridge, Mass.t as a test for color blindness among employees of railway and shipping lines. The innovative test required the employee to match different tassels of worsted wool rather than naming the colors and the success of the test was attributed to the simplicity and portability of the kit.
