Storyteller sculptor Michael Garman was raised in Texas and is known for his multi-media dioramic sculptures often featuring narrative genre scenes of rural and urban life. Many of his narratives are based on people he met during his hitchhiking days in Central and South American in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Santiago, Chile, which is where he discovered his skills as a sculptor. In 1975, he began one of his most impressive ongoing projects, Magic Town, which the artist describes as a “3.000 square-foot dollhouse […] A gritty blend of Walt Disney and Norman Rockwell”. In the past fifty years, Garman has produced hundreds of sculptures focusing on what he considers to be American heroes, or “Art for the people” – military men, firefighters, law enforcers, among others. In his honor, the Michael Garman Museum & Gallery was established in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where the artist settled in 1971. Among Garman’s notable collectors are Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Brokaw, John Elway, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush, among others.
