A Thai style hand-carved wood relief panel. This piece, carved from a large in-tact portion of a tree trunk cut long-ways, appears in the form of a lintel or other architectural decoration. It depicts a makara in the form of an elephant-headed fish face-to-face with another mythological fish or other sea creature, over a layered ground of swirling foliage rendered in intricate detail. The relief has been carved from a single piece of wood, with the exception of the right fish’s eye and wing-like projections on each form that are affixed with wooden pegs. There is hardware to the verso for hanging the piece.
