Spanish Colonial Églomisé Pendant with Papal Bull of 1715, Late 17th Century
Item Details
A Spanish or Spanish Colonial devotional Icon pendant from the late 17th or early 18th century, with knotted acrylic cord tied to the pendant frame added at some point in the 20th century. This double-sided piece features reverse-painted glass images of Christ with gilt accents as Ecce Homo and the Madonna with silver gilt accent as Our Lady of Solitude (Virgen María de la Soledad). The images are encased with a decorative silver-tone metal alloy frame as a pendant. When opened, the pendant contains folded fragments of a Bulla de la Santa Cruzada (Bull of the Crusades), a Papal Bull issued in 1715 by Pope Cement XI describing the indulgences granted for the faithful in assistance to the Catholic Church’s pursuits under King Philip V of Spain in the succeeding year of 1716. It is unclear whether the page fragments were stored inside the pendant for devotional purposes or practical ones to fill the space between the glass painted images. Though photographed separately, the paper has been placed back inside of the pendant and reassembled as it has been for over 300 years.
