Howard Logan Hildebrandt was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania in 1872. An early interest in art sent him to the National Academy of Design in New York, then to the Julian Academy in Paris to study under J.P. Laurens, and finally to the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts. In the early 1900’s he and his wife settled in New Canaan, Connecticut, a popular artist community, where the beautiful natural surroundings served as the background for many of his portraits. Hildebrandt was a member of numerous artist organizations including The National Academy of Design, The American Watercolor Society, The Century Club and additionally was a founding member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists.

- small area of paint loss to lower right corner; craquelure along right edge; scattered accretion; minor wear to frame and stains to liner.
