Peter Hayward was known for his thick palette knife paintings of landscapes and cityscapes. He was born in Keene, New Hampshire, and studied at Middlebury College, graduating in 1923. He divided his painting between the urban scenes of the east coast and the tropical landscapes of Hawaii. Hayward was a member of the famed Salmagundi Clue, the Honolulu Art Association, Windward Artists Guild and the Lahaina Art Association, and was the recipient of the Grand Prize All Media at the Washington Square Outdoor Art Show in the 1950s.

- slight billow to canvas to upper portion; scattered craquelure and accretion; nicks, abrasions and accretion to frame; stains to liner.
