A 1938 color lithograph designed by Leonetto Cappiello for the Mossant Hat Company of France. The advertising poster depicts three gloved men’s hands raising black, grey, and brown bowler hats in a vertical composition on a yellow background with the company name in a red modern font across the upper edge. It is signed in plate to the lower right with the copyright notice in French to the lower left ‘modèle déposé – reproduction interdite’. The print is presented under acrylic glass in a gilt wood frame.
Born in Italy in 1875, Leonetto Cappiello showed an interest and talent in art from an early age. He began his career as a caricaturist, but soon devoted himself to advertising and poster design. In 1898 he moved to Paris, where is innovative, bold designs propelled him to an extremely successful career, and earned him the designation as ‘the father of the modern poster’.
