Item Details
Henry Oscar Houghton (Vermont, 1823-1895), American publisher; mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts. After graduating from the University of Vermont, he entered the publishing industry founding the Riverside Press in 1852. Houghton used better inks and paper in his printing practices holding true to his motto ‘Do it well or not at all’ which won him the commission to print the G. C. Merrian dictionary in 1863. He partnered with George Miffin in 1880 forming the publishing firm Houghton, Miffin & Company.
