A printed presidential proclamation by George Washington, dated January 23, 1795, calling for a day of Public Thanksgiving and Prayer on February 19, 1795.
In this proclamation, a response to the failed Whiskey Rebellion of 1794, Washington states that the rebels threatened “the great degree of internal tranquility we have enjoyed’ and that this tranquility would be restored ‘by the suppression of an insurrection which so wantonly threatened it.’ Washington continues, asking to “diffuse and establish habits of sobriety, order, morality, and piety.”
This document was issued by Samuel Huntington, the Governor and Commander in Chief of the State of Connecticut.
