Spode Blue and White Transfer Printed "Italian" Foot Bath, 1820
Item Details
A Spode Italian foot bath. This pattern is attributed the Josiah Spode II who succeeded his father as the head of the pottery in 1797. This pattern has been in production since 1816 and captured the imagination of the English as travel to Europe became increasingly popular and the incorporation of Japanese elements appealed to those who found the newly popular Imari from Japan exciting. There is an example of a similar footbath in the Spode museum in Stoke-on-Trent. This piece is marked with the standard printed Spode mark as well as a rare impressed crown mark that was reserved for special pieces such as footbaths.
