Born in Ireland, Henry Fenton Spread studied art in Europe before moving to the United States around 1870. Spread taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and went on to found Spread’s Art Academy, which became the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1902. He was named the first president of the Chicago Society of Artists and his works are featured in various institutions and private collections.

- canvas has been relined; wear to edges of frame; surface wear present to painting; toning to varnish; quarter inch repair to lower right of painting; heavy craquelure present throughout painting; billow to canvas.
