Laurent Casimir was born to a peasant family in Haiti in 1928, and moved to Port-au-Prince in the late 1940s where he became involved with the Centre d’Art in 1947. He followed his friend and fellow painter Dieudonne Cedor, to attend the Foyer of Fine Arts. Casimir helped to establish the Haitian style market painting, working and selling out of his home in Martissant, and his style is often imitated.

- buckle to canvas to lower right corner; areas of yellowing to varnish; nicks, scratches and accretion to frame.
