Martin Rettig was born in 1869 in Cincinnati, Ohio to a German beer brewer, and was the younger brother of artist John Rettig (1855-1932). He studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, under Frank Duveneck (1848-1919) and began his career as a decorator at the famed Rookwood Pottery from 1882-1885. There he was known for his Japanesque style design work typical of the pottery at the time. Rettig went on to become a prolific painter, focusing on floral oil paintings, and he was the president of the Cincinnati Art Club from 1918-1920.
